After you buy a hot water system you usually get it installed and forget about it. But when the water in your morning shower starts to run cold, you are promptly reminded of its existence – and importance. Here are 5 signs that will help you identify whether your system needs replacing.

Hot water inconsistency
An early sign that your hot water system is about to die is when the hot water cuts out halfway through your shower or the hot water coming from your tap is significantly colder than usual. If this continues to happen it could mean that you need to replace your hot water system.

Strange noises
If there is a hissing or sizzling noise coming from your system, then a replacement may be required, but be sure to check if relief valve is faulty first. If this is the case, you can simply replace the valve without a full system replacement. For other strange noises such as a popping, banging, cracking, there may be a build-up of sediment at the bottom of the tank. This will need to be drained out.

Rust or sludge
If rust and sludge is visible around the fittings of your hot water system, then it is usually indication of a leak. Try to tighten the fittings before anything else, and if this does not work then you may need to replace the fittings altogether. Leaks are generally quite difficult to fix, so replacing the whole system may be for the best.

Discoloured water
If the water from your hot water tap is coming out red, brown or rust coloured it may mean that there is corrosion in your hot water tank. The sacrificial anode – found in every hot water system – needs to be regularly replaced, and when water comes out as anything but clear it may be because this was not done.

Leaks
Leaks are hazardous as they can cause damage to surrounding walls, floors, carpets and cabinets. If your hot water system has a leak, the first thing you should do is check to see if you can find its source and tighten the fittings. Make sure you call a hot water service and repairs team as soon as you notice the leak.
